Antioch mint, RIC 654. I don't normally bother with these later bronzes, but this one caught my eye for two reasons. First, there seems to be a few traces of a silver wash extant on the obverse. Second, on the reverse there's a star in the field, which is usually interpreted as proclaiming an emperor's divinity, although its unclear why this device is only occasionally incorporated into coin designs.

The photos for some reason somewhat exaggerate the virdigris that's present. Even so, it might not be a bad idea to apply some olive oil solely to the affected areas as a conservation measure (taking care to avoid those spots where any of the silver wash remains).

Some of the better examples of his coins have come out of the Antioch mint. This is a nice one.

I really like Gallienus. This is a nice example. My example is on a flan that is oval instead of round, so it is missing a lot of legend.

Over the years, I have seen a few Galienus antoninianii in As Struck condition. How such base metal alloy coins can survive thus, is a bit of a mystery for me.

This one has minor wear and heavy patination.
Nice coin nevertheless.

if the star proclains divinity , it is maybe the divinity of the town of Rome , Romae aeternae : to the eternal town of Rome. albert

I don't wish to hijack your thread but here are a few examples of some more Antioch mint Gallienus.

Nice example. I like the later bronzes simply because there are so many that can be had in pretty decent condition for very easy prices.

Just to update, the virdigris turns out to be a pretty hard encrustation and resistant to mitigation, and I'm disinclined to get too aggressive with regard to it.

Although in with a bunch of 4th century types that I thought generally overpriced at $25 each, this 3rd century misfit was sold to me for less than half that. Even with its shortcomings, it's hard to be disappointed at that price point.

In other cases, the star appears on reverses depicting personifcations other than Roma.
