XF-45 details, cleaned and retoned (possibly artificially).

XF Dets, improperly cleaned (you can tell by all the scratches), then artificially toned.

This looks like an original AU coin that was dipped, lightly wiped and then did not retone very well. I do not think it is artificial toning. My grade would be AU53 details, altered surfaces. The coin has a wonderful full strike and it was probably quite attractive before it was mishandled.

Quote: If it was dipped why would one wipe it? Just wondering, as wiping any coin would alter the fields! A very good question. The answer lies in the fact that prior to the advent of the modern era of collecting (1970's and going forward) coins such of this one were often stored in envelopes, on coin boards, or in albums. It was not at all uncommon for many collectors to clean their coins when acquired, and then every once in awhile take them out and lightly wipe the surfaces with soft cloths or light brushes to either clean/condition the coins or remove dust and dirt. This tended to leave fine hairline scratches, often made more visible by strong lighting, and not the heavy gouges caused by mechanical polishing or "whizzing." Sometimes the coins would be left in the album, and you'll see coins from the old days that have deep toning and untouched surfaces on the reverse but hairlines and cleaning on the obverse, where they would be given a light wipe in the album as "routine maintenance" every so often.

I don't like the look of all the hairlines going across it. I wouldn't buy it.

It has some killer detail. My first thought when looking at the obverse was that it had been cleaned but looking at the toning makes me think otherwise. The reverse is special. It almost looks like a beautifully toned proof coin but they didn't make proofs on these. I'm stumped.

This coin looks like it was a heavily toned AU-55 that was dipped by an inexperience person . Would have been a nice Barber coin if proper conservation was done .
