This is a contemporary counterfeit of a 1773 George III Half Penny. They were made in England and America, during a time coppers were considered more "token" than coin of the realm. George III began cracking down on exact replicas, and so they latter made "evasion" tokens with obviously different legends. This is not an evasion, but is made to look like "regal" half pence from the Tower of London Mint. It is not from "Machin Mills" (in Red Book) as those are known to be American made and from the same source as Confederation "States" coppers. Many varieties exist. Better ones have fantasy dates when no regal coppers were made by England, or are especially crude in design in a folk art manner.
