I would be very skeptical of this one. Counterfeiters love to fake this issue and there is something "off" about this one.

My gut is telling me that its a fake. Are you thinking about buying it?

I agree - this one doesn't look right to me either. The details in the eagle seem wrong - why is the snake so fully struck yet some of the adjacent feathers seem worn? The liberty cap is weirdly outlined as well. Some of the lettering also seems off. I would steer clear of this one.

Well a friend mine has a stash of coins he wanted to get rid off so he asked me to take a look to see if I would be interested to buy. I'm going through the coins now, cataloging and valuating them, and I came across this one. Will skip it then. Thanks for the advice guys. Much appreciated!

That's a pretty crude looking modern fake. At least not as bad as the super commonly seen 1882 Zs version :)

Welcome to the Forum

The coin is a recently made numismatic forgery intended to defraud buyers. These coins and their close cousins the 1882 Zs JS that I have written about many times should be destroyed or marked COPY very clearly to preclude resale as if genuine.

These are not Circulating Contemporary Counterfeit issues. The distinction is an important one.

Contemporary circulating counterfeits (CCC) are not items in the same class as the cheap recently made forgeries, fakes, replicas etc., produced to fool novice collectors that are causing damage to numismatics. Contemporary Counterfeits are a class of historic items that were made to circulate alongside genuine coins in commerce where they often went undetected for decades. Many are still being discovered in TPG slabs. These items have historic context and are actually scarcer than most of the coins they copied.
