This coin came in with a bunch of foreign coins.

I think it might be a Japan 100 Mon

I have been getting ready to move, and all my books are packed.

Any opinions on what to look for?

Yup, 100 mon.

The most basic thing to check is the edge at 3:00 and 9:00. You should see two small validation punchmarks. All genuine examples will have these, and almost no modern Chinese fakes do.

There are apparently a hundred or so different varieties. According to Hartill, only one is worth anything more than the "going" price. Can you post a picture to show the characters in better lighting?

I suggest you buy it from Japan seller on ebay, it minimizes the risk for getting fake stuff.

Looks like common calligraphy, smaller hole. The rare variety had a long, slanted left foot of the "ho" character at the bottom of the obverse; yours has a normal straight foot. I don't see metal distortion from the countermarks; are they present? They should display as a roughly five point star shape.

Also, the fields are rough, indicating that this was most likely a regional or quasi-official issue. Genuine, Imperial-issued coins were cast in the finest sand that could be procured; local clans sometimes made their own coins in coarser sand.
