I am new to ebay buying and a novice beginner at collecting but I have a question. Besides the obvious, how can you tell if an NGC case has been opened? I recently purchased a coin from an ebay seller with close to a 1000 positive comments and only 1 negative comment but when I received my NGC certified coin I couldn't tell if the scratches were on the case or the coin and at the top of the case it wasn't smooth and finished. Is there anything specifically to look for? Any help would be appreciated.

1996-P SILVER AMERICAN EAGLE PF69 ULTRA CAMEO NGC

Thanks

Mike

Welcome to the forums! I think it would be pretty hard to open the NGC case and put it back together without noticing it. I'll be busting open my first NGC case in a few days, i'll let you know how that goes ;)

Thanks for the welcome ceaton, please let me know how your slab cracking goes. I really should just not worry about it and enjoy the coin but I also don't want to be naive today and surprised if I ever do decide to sell.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM.
Some time ago at a coin show a dealer I know showed me a slabbed coin. He said don't look at the coin yet but see if you can tell if the case was tampered with. I couldn't find anything wrong with the case. Then I looked at the coin. It was a beat up, scratched up, corroded common Lincoln Cent. The Lable stated a MS-62 Mercury dime. The dealer did that to show people you just can't trust anyone or anything.
As to breaking open an NGC case, I find them more difficult than most others. Seams thicker so takes more time but still easy. I use a saber saw with a simi-metal cutting blade, cut the ends off and the case just falls open.
As to ebay feedbacks. I know many people that have many others send in fanstastically great feedbacks for them. Play a game of buy a few silly items, send in great feedbacks and presto, you are a great person.

Regarding just carl's comments, caveat emptor! Given enough time, patience, and profit motive, anything can be forged or faked; from coin slabs to feedback. Know not only what you are buying, but who you are buying it from.

I would not hesitate to post any future ebay purchases you are considering into the Ebay/Auction Site Forum to get the input of the community! And while you are there, check out the sticky posts!

I agree with the above comments....also, in the future, always check if the seller has a return policy. Intentional or not, pictures can be misleading. Its always reassuring to know that you can send a coin back if you'r enot satisfied for whatever reason. You might have to eat the shipping costs, but its better than paying a couple hundred dollars for a special coin you thought you were getting

We'll have to wait for my results. The slab I bought is being returned :( I guess I have more time to find the right tool for the job ;)
