Then, that focus will shift to the Wheat album.

Yes, the key word there: Focus It's always to easy for me to get side tracked.

That's really cool, spruett. What does the die face look like? Is it completely obliterated or is there something recognizable still?

Oh, wait... is that narrower diameter end with the "N" on it what was the face?

edit: reading the COA, that does indeed seem to be the case. Face obliterated.

This may have been asked already, are you cracking any of these out to put in your album? some of those I'm not sure I could bare cracking them out.

Right, the face is completely ground down. The only thing visible is the step-down for the rim, no design at all. I was hoping they missed a sliver or something, but nope, they removed it all. I hope to eventually get another die (any coin, really) that has a visible design.

Currently, I have no plans to crack out any of the slabbed coins. It actually works out nicely with the extra album page I added. Because I stopped raw proofs at 1952 then moved to slabbed proofs going back, I have 12 empty holes and that's exactly enough to add all of the 2004 & 2005 nickels (including proofs). I plan on getting those nickel sets soon, so every album hole will be filled, including the ones I added!

But yeah, that 1942 Type 2 proof is the most expensive coin I have ever purchased, so I can't justify cracking it and sticking it in a cardboard hole just yet. Also, the proofs are all the same grade and I want to stick to that. That's primarily because of price point, but having them all slabbed in the same grade is kind of neat, too. As a side note, I plan on having slabbed "subsets." Those will include all the SMS coins (65-67, 94 & 97) and a set of War Nickels in plastic (including a sub-subset of $ mintmark nickels; I have 2/4 so far). I already have the 65-67 SMS coins in the album as well as the BU War Nickels, so I am definitely going to have duplicates or even triplicates and that alleviates the temptation to crack anything out.

I may also end up getting the original coin & currency sets that hold the 94 and 97 SMS coins, so I will have essentially raw examples of those as well as slabbed.

All this will take some time, of course, but I want this set to be so much more than "just an album."
