It is 50 years this month since the launch of the late lamented 'Coin Monthly' magazine in Brentwood, England.

Coming at the time of the sudden rush of interest in British coins on the lead-up to decimalisation, the magazine soon became a respected numismatic publication. There were regular features on ancient and foreign coins, and its size (slightly larger than a normal paperback book) made it easy to handle.

Sadly, its popularity faded in the 1980s and 1990s. Attempts to restore profitability by increasing the cover price to £3.95 (which even now seems high for a small-format magazine with black-and-white photos) failed, and it last hit the shelves in February 1992.

A few back issues:

So has another British publication filled the void since this publication ended?

Not really. The only one now is Coin News, which is the old Coins & Medals magazine with a new name:

I love the tagline on the last magazine cover: "COIN COLLECTING -- THE PROFITABLE HOBBY"

They use that word, profitable. I do not think it means what they think it means.

I really want Mandy to slip that line into Homeland. Imagine Saul saying it to Dar or Carrie.

A brilliant movie, top to bottom, front to back. And "old school" indeed... 30+ years now.

Somehow I don't see Patinkin slipping references to his own pop culture into his current work. Though it would be AWESOME.
