Picked up this interesting specimen. Silver washed copper or bronze, appears to be made from a transfer die as the details are correct but the eagle is much shallower in profile. Weighs 14.56 grams, which is a bit low but close enough that it would not feel too light in hand. The edge lettering is not very well executed, but it's cool that they took the extra step to make it more convincing. Historically, this year was the return of a stable currency after a period of out of control inflation and rampant counterfeiting following WWI, so it's somewhat ironic in that sense :)

This one would have been fairly convincing before the silver wash began to wear off.

Your conclusions as to manufacture look absolutely correct.

An interesting fake that is worth keeping for its ability to show that type of "minting", if nothing else.

HMMM ... my guess is a brush-on silver mercuric paste over a copper host coin. Very unusual for an early 20thC CC. Based on its crudeness this counterfeiter may have even applied this silver paste over a brass surface. In my new book I call these types French plate - unlike the English the French counterfeiters of the 18/19thC as an example did not realize that silver adheres MORE POORLY to brass than copper. From my research this was also how they made their antiquities of the time when silver plated. Bronze is rarely seen as a host coin by itself and is usually alloyed with brass as a brass/bronze mixture. Tin (Bronze) makes the coin lighter and more brittle and zinc is therefore preferred or brass trumps bronze in the host's alloy in most cases. In terms of mercuric silvered brass when was the last time you saw a 19thC French Ecu that was 90+% silvered ... but remember when made they only had to fool the first SUCKER and the job of the French silvered brass host CC was complete and successful. BTW if you do see one on ebay send me a private PM ... LOL.

I would say it is a contemporary circulating counterfeit.

Perfectly legal now and of some value. Nice coin.

Thanks Bob. It was you and John that pretty much got me into the real dark side of numismatics - CCC's. Still debating whether or not I'm thankful for that :D
