When it comes to buying roman coins for me, I'm like most. Patina, good strike and a well centered legend make a difference. Enough so to were I've bought "cheap" fillers just for a set completion and swear that I would buy a better one when I had the money for it and they usually arrive researched down to the RIC reference. But buying these coins for me is about the history that comes with it. Nothing gives you that better than an uncleaned set (as long as you have realistic expectations).Chances are you won't find a showpiece and may not even get the value you put into it. After buying a few batches you get enough slugs, constansomething and fallen horseman (seriously why so many horseman) saved up. Instead of me letting them set around I went ahead and threw them in olive oil for sometime. What came out is what I expected for the most part, slugs and horsemen. But I did find a few I liked.

I haven't bought any uncleaned lots in years. By the time they are sold to us they have been cherry picked for the good coins and the low grade ones are put into bag lots for sale. Most turn out to be culls and Constans somethings. Maybe if your lucky something good is overlooked and you get a few nice coins, but for the most part it really isn't worth the time or effort to clean them. Though I must say when I was doing it I enjoyed the process of removing the dirt and uncovering an ancient coin underneath.

That first Constantine turned out pretty good!

I've only soaked one batch of coins (two 24 hour soaks in peroxide, then 6 months in oil). Half came out still slugs, and the other half were only just identifiable as to type, with no legends legible.

I do have to admit at any rate that a lot of my best deals have been in lots, usually marketed as "uncleaned" or "unidentified".

Thank you Finn. I've been having an ache to buy a new batch for the last week, so I decided to mess around with some I set to the side until I find some I like.
