Hello all,

I picked this up a while ago for 15 Euros and wondered if its worth anything.

I was in 2 minds whether to get it or not as there is damage, but its strange damage.
To me it doesn't look like direct damage, it looks like it was under a carpet and being walked on, slowly over time it has done a bit of wear, plus 1/3 of the damaged side (head side) is actually unaffected which leads me to think it was say under a skirting board, 1/3 unexposed and 2/3 exposed, that would explain why the bottom 2/3 seems worn/damaged and the other 1/3 doesn't.
Though its not weather damage as it's not rusty or going green.
What do you think?

The writing side seems mainly unaffected, virtually mint apart from a slight wearing of the flowery thing going around.

The coin is better than what it looks in these pictures but the damaged looks ephasised by the crap camera unable to define it more clearly.

It's around 28mm wide, around 1.5 mm thick, its actually quite heavy for a copper coin.

I've included some pictures, again if you look at the head side, about a 3rd of the way down you can see where the damage starts as the stars at the top even still have the lines going through them but below it looks like it has been walked over repeatedly but not directly.

Just wondered if I was ripped off or if 15 Euros was a bargain (around £12). Is it worth anything decent?

I'm not great at grading these buggers but I'm guessing about VF-35, so somewhere around $35-40. That's a guesstimate, but $15 euros is a good buy.

The piece has some minor corrosion on it, especially in the date area and to the left of that. As such I'd net grade to Fine-VF. For 15 Euros I think you did fine.

Ty both :D
Luckily you can still make out the 1-38 in the year just the 1st 8 is mangled, such a shame, I like to think it was underneath the carpet of an old hotel (no idea why haha)

I'm not really very good with coins, I collect banknotes but when there are no banknotes at Rommelmarkts (like huge car boot sales) I get some coins instead thought I dont really know what I'm going for, I just try and go for as old as possible and as in good condition as possible lol.

That coin was bought in Belgium, surprising how they turn up in a small country miles away from the US. Also got a mint condition Indian Head penny for a 1 Euro, not sure how much that is in dollars, maybe $1.80.

Thank you for your help both, have a great weekend

Price seems OK, but the corrosion would bother me.
