According to the mint, this is everything there is to know about our nickels. Only one type is made for circulation.

2000 - present
Composition: 94.5% steel, 3.5% copper, 2% nickel plating
Weight (g): 3.95
Diameter (mm): 21.2
Thickness (mm): 1.76

wildflowerAB what I can see is a piece of the nickel plating has come of the coin. its coming off the N in cent on the 5 cent coin. I dont want to pick at it. its in a very hard place to photograph. the color of the metal underneath the nickle plating of the coin. it is the same color as a toonie center. I will try to find away to take a picture of the metal

ok got the battery charged for my camera. the first 2 phots are of the obverse and the reverse. the 3 photo will show the strange metal. if you look closely at the beaver. you can see the plating is lifting. the coin just looks different. opinions please like to here your thoughts. some of the letters its like there was to much metal. see the flow from the dies. the way I am bouncing the light. this coin has a star burst effect on the bust. I am not able to capture that effect with bounced light. here are the images

Canacoins I want to let you know there is 2 variations of the 2016 nickels. I have checked a pile of them. where the differences is check picture 6 picture of the A. there is 2 different A on these 2016. I dont know how there could be a difference. I think they must have used 2 different dies. if you check a pile of them you should find the difference. you will see the differences very quickly. I photography one later so you can see what I mean.

Judging from your pic's they didn't blow the wad
on the dies either, they look uniform but rough. Similar
to reeding.

I believe the steel planchet is plated with copper and then nickel, that may have taken a hit and what you are seeing is the copper plating, The roughness on the letters looks like MD a worn or chipped die issue to me. My humble opinion
