The 'railroad' edge is plain to see, and goes all the way around the coin. I'm assuming that the coin was struck partially out of collar, and that is what caused the rim on the reverse to not be fully struck and be flat, yet fully struck on the obverse? Edited by johnnysprawl 01/21/2017 10:58 pm

It looks a bit suspect to me. The unstruck portion of the rim should be more rounded I think. Is the diameter larger than usual (it should be slightly larger). Also, if you look at the rim under high-power, do you see evidence of machining (lines going around the circumference), or indications of it being struck (fine perpendicular lines)?

The unstruck portion of the reverse rim is flat but is slightly higher than the face of the coin.
The diameter is slightly larger (21.9 mm) relative to a normal 1975 nickel (21.3 mm).
No machining lines on the rim.

Yes. This error is called a partial collar error. This example would also be more colloquially referred to as a "railroad rim".
Without a collar to shape the edge of one side of the coin, this portion does not have to be perfectly round.
