There was an old thread about these, but I never did learn whether the cause was figured out. Close-up shot is confusing to the eye, but included a bit of the nape of the neck to help with that. It seems to show regular old die scratches across the bottom of the pit in front of the ear (enhanced to show those in particular).

Note the ear area is showing lines that are in a different direction than the die was trying to form on this area. It was blocked with grease in this area and prevented the ear to form in that area. It is called a "Struck through error" (grease). This is common to see some areas where where is blocked. But they get more interesting when a large portion of the devices are blocked. (80-95%)

Knowing what caused this is the real knowledge of this happening is real value for your coin. Some on ebay may show interest. But the more devices blocked out is what error collectors prefer.

THanks Coop. I would have just thought this Struck Through Grease anyway until I saw those marks that looked like the die struck the bottom of the pit rather than a grease glob.

I think a Grease Filled Die, plus less than a full strike.

Those lines were on the planchet, that didn't get erased with the strike because of the grease in the die.

That's really cool! Despite what coop says about many desiring more devices blocked, I think the position makes it interesting too. Missing an ear jus catches my attention more than detail in the hair, etc.

I wouldn't have known what it was without this thread though, so thanks for the lesson!

Someone will give it a name like 'Van Gogh ear' and someone will snag it. A lot if items get catchy names and people fall for them. Go think? It will bring large money, and the same day a great variety will bring next to nothing. But who gains more? The seller of of course. Years down the road the guy that paid too much for his coin will wonder why he blew his money. But the guy that got the deal on a variety will be able to cash in on his purchase.
