Yes, the die is worn toward the edges. Die Deterioration, but I don't know why some of the tops are incuse.

As I think you probably know, the die is reverse of the coin ie.. what's raised on the die is incuse on the coin. I can't believe the die has raised areas where your coin is incuse (at the top of UNIT). So my best guess is it must have bounced on a tilt when it was struck. It's an unusual error, but I think it's highly spendable.

The gray areas are where the die split the coins plating. This is Die Deterioration. The normal die flow is blocked by the devices. The reason the lines are raised, it that the die is wearing down. (incuse on the die fields leave raised lines on the coins.

This is because of the single squeeze dies profile height is lower than the multi-hubbed dies. The die wear and fields are affected differently. On the multi hubbed dies in the past the die wear was mainly on the outside edge of the devices.

You can see the flow lines starting on the outside edge of the devices and starting now to flow to the fields.

You can see the die wear pattern is different than the single squeezed dies we see today. The extra height made the devices start the flow from the edge of the devices towards the rim. The central fields lines still flow in the open fields.
But on the single squeezed dies, they start the flow just beyond the devices:

The die wear is towards the nearest rim area:
Dates to the right, LIBERTY to the left and motto towards the tops of the devices. This is just the way things work. They die is aging and the die flow lines are like the wrinkles seniors acquire as they age. So there is no premium for this. It is part of the affects of the die growing old.

Yes, I see. I did notice the split plating, but couldn't figure it out. Thanks Coop, that's good to know.
Oldmike, when you see the green, you know the plating has been compromised. Once it's split like that, air gets to the zinc and you're right, the self destruction begins.
