Staff edit - These posts were split from The 7 Days of Ike (Eisenhower) Dollars II thread so it can stay on topic Since I have the Ike experts here, can somebody tell me what the Happy Eagle Ike is? I did a search, but didn't come up with anything. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Haven't heard "Happy Eagle". Do you mean 1971-D "Friendly Eagle"

Yeah, Fuzzy, I bet you're right, it could have been the friendly eagle I was thinking of. So, what's the "Friendly Eagle" ?

There is a nice description of the difference on the The Ike Group under Varieties. 1971-D Friendly Eagle is what to click.

Cool, that is an interesting variety. I'm sure the only primary reason I haven't heard of it was pointed out on the link you gave me. It's underappreciated, etc. Thanks, that's a new site for me, too. I have a lot of Ikes of all flavors but have never really taken the time to study them beside the basic Types that everyone points out. Very interesting reverse die and for what it's worth, the eagle looks both friendly and happy. Maybe he's happy because he just ate a Night-crawler on the moon.

I know there are varieties for Ikes, Morgans, and Peace dollars, but I don't really follow them either

I split our posts about the friendly eagle to its own topic, so jbuck's Ike thread would stay more on topic

Ah yes, the 1971-D Friendly Eagle Variety. I love this Ike and have a one myself. They are a nice find. The namesake is due to the absence of a brow line which makes the eagle look friendlier. I'll post a pic that I labeled to point out some of the differences. The FEV is unique and fairly easy to identify. There are 11 markers, most can be seen without magnification. Quite a few were minted, so they're not super rare, but not common either. For some reason, PCGS and others would not recognize it as a variety for a long time, but now most of the TPGs do. It's officially known as RDV-006.

@ Biedercoins...Great question!! Thanks for asking it. I have read about the FEV variety and was still confused about what to look for.
@batboy. Love your explanation. Cleared everything up for me. MUCH appreciated.
