Interesting find. Think its called split rim, but not sure. I'll wait for the experts to reply.

To me it looks like it was added after the strike. Coin counter or vending machine damage? The strike pressing downard wouldn't leave a mark like that.

I found a 1983 yesterday that looks identical to this one. The area under Lincoln's bust is raised, I would think they were done at the mint.

What I'm seeing on this coin is the direction that area is getting pushed. The metal flows toward the rim. The direction of the alteration is just the opposite direction. Pushed towards the center of the coin. That is what I'm seeing on this coin. An outside source if the only thing I can think of that could have caused that direction.

Ramjethero, If your 1983 is the same I'd like to see an image.

Hard for me to make out exactly what going on this 1982 as its gets dark in the area. If it is raised and follows the contour of the rim and flows back into the rim I think possible die attrition or may just be Die Deterioration. Can't tell for sure. Thanks, Doug.

Pictures of the 1983 I found this weekend. The rest of the rim is normal so this does not appear to be an off center strike.

Ramjethero, Seems like some potential collar clashing happened on yours. Meant to recommend putting in a new post earlier, but if it showed a similar trait to the original post works for me as well. Thanks, Doug.

I'm seeing a entirely different thing with these new images. It looks more not to me to be die attrition.
