It looks like it spent some time underground in acidic soil. I have a few interesting pieces that look similar.

I kinda leaned towards acid as well, but I was curious as to what "deficient plating" looked like - I am not familiar with what that looks like .

May not just be acid. CocaCola will do the same thing if you keep changing the fluid.

These years aren't plated but solid nickel, so it can't have deficient plating.
