I, like many collectors, am usually very cautious about buying raw Trades but this one looked good to me so I went for it. Received it yesterday and in under magnification I saw bumps on the arm and the "T" in "TRADE". Looked like casting bubbles to me. With fear in my heart,I went to Heritage to look at some high grade examples and saw the same thing on them too. Any Trade dollar experts out there know what they are? This coin is on its way to PCGS so this will be a you vs PCGS when it gets back. Who knows? Perhaps it will body bag. If not, hoping for a grade of AU-55.

I would agree with a maybe AU, but an AU details. The reverse looks cleaned to me.

That looks more like the dies got nicked than a cast coin. It looks razor sharp with a great strike. My AU58 76S has a soft crown and head. Yours looks much better.

Love the feather and talon details on the eagle.

Right, beautiful smooth fields - not cast! Castings have rough fields from the "sand" molds. And usually a seem around the coins edge from the cope and drag molds coming together before the pour of the metal!

The coin concerns me for evident reasons, but if genuine, I would grade it EF-45 and probably cleaned.

The color is off. Definitely a details coin if not a counterfeit. XF Details.

This is one I would avoid if it was offered to me. It may be genuine but this one gives me some real concern. Razor sharp detail with surfaces that look artificially aged. Your close up photos have details that also concern me. Might be a good idea to check the weight if you have it in hand.

There is a reason why I stick with slabbed coins when it comes to coins like this....I don't want to buy a possible counterfeit

There was another post/debate recently about the unattached leaf on the obverse branch. Also on uncleaned Trade dollars, I have found that the crud doesn't jam into the edges of the devices. Usually it's the opposite with clear halos forming around the stars. If it's genuine that coin will have NO problem grading au-55.

Thanks for all the input. Good insight. These are the last 2 pics I took as now the coin is on its way to California! There is a lot of luster but I was unable to capture it with my camera.

Honestly I would've brought it to a reputable dealer before sending it to PCGS. I have a feeling it'll not be genuine or it'll come back cleaned.
