Hey there.
I am getting started collecting coins after a LONG break and besides some coin album sets, I am looking at also collecting a few select "mint proof sets".
One thing I have seen by going to a few local shops and shows is that some of the proof sets have "tarnish" on the coins.
How much does this impact their value and how concerned should I be?
When I look at some listing on ebay and (207) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed , I sometimes see these listed as "rainbow toning", but not sure if that is a "good thing" or a "bad thing".
Should I stay away from these, or is it not an issue, or is it really a persona choice decision?
But I guess how much will it impact the "value" of the proof sets down the line, and does it mean the problem will continue to get worse.
Thanks for the help.
Regards,
Michael

Some like it some don't. Actually it comes down to your personal taste.

The rainbow toning can add significant premium. Toning can change the price in either direction it's a matter of appeal. Like bad2thebone said it's personal preference.
Alternatively, a coin that is too white might be cleaned which always detracts value. Just something else to watch fo. More so than toning I think.

Since you are concerned how toning will "impact their value down the line", then you must be able to know and predict future demands for tarnished coins. It is my personal opinion that all toning is just tarnish, no matter how pretty it may appear. Tarnish is a form of degradation.

Tarnish never gets better by itself. Tarnish can get worse, though. Will a "rainbow toned" coin always show the "pretty colors"? I don't know.

In the case of proof sets or mint sets still in their original packaging, the toning is probably natural. Then there is the discussion of artificial toning (another topic).

OK, so will tarnished coins be more valuable "down the line" than non-tarnished coins? Not to me, personally.

Tarnish, tone, call it what you will. Some like it, some do not. It is a personal preference. I do not mind a little colour and have come to appreciate it more than I once did.

It depends what kind of toning. If it is a haze, then I value the set less.
