It has nothing to do with the condition of the coin, but rather the condition of the die that struck the coin. The die was starting to wear down, and caused this phenomenon. I call it ghosting effect, how it was once explained to me was that the high speed of the newer presses caused a lot of pressure heat transfered from the dies to the coin. There's Die Deterioration Doubling to the south east of the date also. (Picture is not great.) Report this Post to the Staff

The Die Deterioration flows to the closest rim. Date devices to the right, LIBERTY to the left and on the motto to the edge on the tops of the devices. Report this Post to the Staff
