You find that a lot on the 90's pennies mostly. I call it ghosting effect, how it was once explained to me was that the high speed of the newer presses caused a lot of pressure heat transfered from the dies to the coin. Die Deterioration, yes, think of the "billions" of pennies pressed, how many were on each die used?

Everardo, here's an example that I came across today. 1996 D, and it was the seemingly doubled or repunched mint mark that first caught my eye. There's Die Deterioration Doubling to the south east of the date also. (Picture is not great.)

It is Die Deterioration. Note the pattern of die wear on obverse images. The Die Deterioration flows to the closest rim. Date devices to the right, LIBERTY to the left and on the motto to the edge on the tops of the devices.

Quote: and noticed a double punched mintmark In addition to the points made in the responses above, the last year mintmarks were hand punched was 1989.

Quote: I call it ghosting effect, Please don't, Ghosting is a term used for a completely different thing. [quote] think of the "billions" of pennies pressed, how many were on each die used?[/quote} Average die life on cent dies is one to one and a half million coins.
