As a result of recent noodling I have found two of the new 2016 "50th Anniversary of Decimal Currency" 10 cent coins that appear to have variations in the thickness and spacing of the "SD" initials on the reverse. I have attached a picture summarising my findings. Have any other Coin Community Forum members found similar? Squire Edited by Squire Wilson 01/26/2017 12:50 am

Checking my 2016 10 cent pieces I have noticed that the Normal SD and the Fine, spaced SD varieties also occur in the 2016 normal, large head (non 50th Anniversary) coins. Pleased with that find! Another one to collect? Has anyone checked this variety for other years? Not sure if this should have been another thread. Hans

Interesting - I'll have to take a closer look at some. Are they both easy enough to find?

I have found them both quite easily. Interestingly, I had a mint bag or two and found both varieties in them. At a guess I'd say that the fine SD would account for 15% or more of those that I have looked at. I will be looking at other dates in the next day or two to see if they also have the two varieties. I had two 2014, five 2015 and four 2016 10c pieces at hand - all 2014 and 2015 were thick SD and two 2016 were thick SD. Doesn't seem to be any other change (that I can see anyway) besides some of the feathers being thicker too.

Two 2016 were thin I should say.
Anyone given this a closer look? Seems like the thickness of the letters might be a little variable - possibly the mint playing around with strike pressure? The shape of the S does seem to differ though.

Alright the more I look at my coins the more I think there is no difference aside from the depth of strike - it's very easy to see different S shapes by tilting the coin in the light and getting different shadows. My 2c is that's it's just strike pressure.

And to put this to bed I emailed the mint and said there was no intentional design change.

Although these tiny differences are interesting I don't think it is anything more than normal.

That is interesting, not sure whether to collect them or not. Probably wont go looking for other years. Thanks. Hans
