Hi, I'm still new to coin collecting and I have a question. I was given the chance to look through a bunch of wheat pennies and I've finding some very shiny ones here and there. I was wodnering if these are worth anything much more than face. Or if I should just throw them back in the pile, thanks.

That is a very broad question first off hold them on their edges dont get fingerprints on them in case they are valuable. Depending how many there are you may have a lot of homework to do if your serious. First off any red ones that look uncirculated are keepers no matter what year. If they are all yours to keep I wouldnt throw any back into the wild-keep em safe and slowly start researching key dates and varieties

Wheat Cents are worth about 2-4 cents for common ones that are circulated. The older they are the value goes up. 1909-1919 are harder to find than 1950-59. The better condition they are in, the more they can be worth. Shiny new is better than old and beat up. However with that being said, there are certain dates that are worth a lot. So although they are worth more in good condition, a beat up 1914 D is worth more than a shiny 1958.

I would start by sorting them out by year. Try not to do any more damage to them if you can help it.

Some of the key dates you are looking for would be (just to name a few)
1909 S
1909 S VDB
1914 D
1922 ( no mint mark)
1955 Doubled Die (looks like it was stamped twice on the date)
1943 Copper (very few known to exist as this was the year they were made of steel)
1931 S
1924 D
1911 S

Once you have them sorted by date and mint mark. (example 1944 S, 1994 D, 1944 P) You can find a price guide and check to see how much each one is worth. If you have questions about specific ones, come back and post clear pictures. We would love to tell you more about what you find.

Good Luck! Have Fun!

Maybe this post would go better in the grading section. I can tell you that you have some nice toners, though.
