Well I just purchased this in a job lot of silver from ebay. The rest of them are authentic, and I assume that this probably is, but when comparing it to my other Morgan dollars it appears so shiny! Maybe someone has tried cleaning it ¬_¬ and it has ended up like this. I tried to get the best photos I could.

It seems to almost look gold-plated in colour, and the outside rim has stayed silver on both sides. What could have caused this?
Many thanks in advance :)

It weighs 26.85 grams and measures 37.5mm in diameter.

Considering that it is worn and overweight, maybe it is gold plated.
Rest in Peace

Well that makes sense, thanks for that.

I've never seen a gold-plated one before. Has this been done some time in the recent past? Or was it minted like this as some sort of special edition? I doubt the value will be increased much by this really.

It's real....real gold plated! Looks cleaned as well, so it's probably not worth much over melt at this point.

Yea someone probably plated it in an attempt to cover up a cleaning. Worth melt.

My thought is that this was once a pice of jewelry. It was possibly in a bezel of some sort and it was gold plated to make it look flashier. That is just my random thought and I am more than likely way off.

Probably plated to be used as a jewelry item at one time.

Nice find . .

Consider having it analyzed for gold quality. If it's 14K or better might be sellable to the right collector. IMHO, you never know!

Thanks, well I know that thick plating is normally 10k of above, in The USA anyway, so it may be at least that...but we'll see what bids I get when I get round to listing it. I like coins silver, and all silver :P

Or a full set for someone with one ear!!

Realistically a bezel is what I was thinking. Seems like it was put in a bezel mount then the entire piece was plated as the rim shows no sign of plating.
