It's not an error, it's just the way the mint mark was punched into the die. On one die, it was punched deeper than it was on the other die, making a wider, deeper void in the die, which creates a taller, fatter mint mark on the coin.
Up until around 1990, I think it was, the mint marks were punched into the dies by hand, so their position and depth would vary from die to die.

Referring to the top picture, Your coin on the left is a Small date, while the coin on the right is a Large date.....That said, Mint marks can not only appear different like CWB mentioned, but actually be completely different. Just like different dies used for the coins themselves, different dies are also used for the mint marks. Up until a certain point in time as well, ALL Mint marks were pressed in one mint ( I think Philadelphia), and then shipped to the respective mint.

I can't see the small date on the left, I can only see the coin in the middle and the one on the right.

The only mint mark style that MMS-008. So the mint punched may have been punched deeper on that die. Also the mint mark punch can be damaged and alter the shape of the mint mark as well.

Also machine damage can alter the mint mark. Hoe this helps.
