Hi, folks. This coin has some marks on it that I've seen on other Modern and some classic coins. In particular, I see them on halves. Often, I see them on otherwise very high grade coins.

The number (4) and even spacing suggests to me that they are caused by some tool, but what tool? Anybody else see these?

What sort of value damage is causes by this physical damage?

These sort of marks are usually caused by another coin hitting this and leaving the marks from its reeding on the edge of the coin.

That is my thought as well. Like bag marks, from banging around in a bag of half dollars.

Wouldn't those marks subtract about a point from the grade?

They are considered damage. They occur when the reeded edge of one coin digs into the surface of another, usually when they are bagged together.

This is sometimes called "railroad tracks" as it looks a bit like them.

They will always reduce the value depending on how severe they are and where they are located.

Railroad Tracks, huh? I guess that's as good a name as any. It stinks, though, because they Really stand out on fields of proofs, PL, and otherwise glassy fields.

I was wrong about the number (4) though. The first time I really noticed them is when I got this Walking Liberty:

It might be very soft reed lines. But I would have to see it closer to tell for sure.

Bit it would have to be real soft to make just that strength of marks. If it were hot through a cello, that might soften the blow a bit?
