This Seated half dime is in nice condition all around, seems cleaned, though much of the hairlines may well be die polishing lines. The words " Half Dime" are all messed up. I get cross-eyed looking at them. Any theories?

What do you all say?

a real head-scratcher

a clash wouldn't mess the words Half Dime up like that.

Let's see what others have to say.

I cannot see it being anything other than damage. The last photo clearly shows vertical gouges that have displaced the metal.
Rest in Peace

It almost looks like a hand punch, tilted, and slid slightly top to bottom of coin causing metal displacement. Question is, what kind of punch, when and why. Nice coin for obverse type otherwise.

I'm thinking a whizz job with a wire brass brush on a dremel type rotary tool.

i think it was soldered then scraped most of it off and they tried re-engraving the letters.

Is it really silver? If almost looks fake from what I can see. Is that are rare coin or a common date?

Looks like the reverses were a bit weak on some:

Some had clashes:

The whole coin appeared to be overly polish, strike on the obverse around the shield area is missing a lot of details, the denticle does not look right also. I think this either is harshly cleaned with steel wool on both side, and buffed afterward.
