I don't think it's an error. Just looks like some grime making our eyes go cooky

What letters would it mimic? It is too small to be anything from the design. It is just your eyes making sense of rippling on the plating. That is what happens when you look too closely to an area. It makes nothing seem like something.

Ok thanks coincollector2000 and coop I thought that may be it but wanted to make sure. I am getting better at identifying things but I still have a long way to go ! The reverse of this coin is rough as well it has a long die crack and some md and the flow marks are very large I would say it was at the end of its life. ive seen this in a lot of the 1988 reverses and I have a few of the 1988s with the 1989 reverse they started using early like coop told me about because the 88s were in such bad shape. thanks for your replies ! And by the way tell john1 I got the photos upright.

I like to let others know what I see on a coin. That way they can use that knowledge on future coins they find. I don't like to give yes or no answers, I like them to see what I see with a description.

I appreciate that very much coop you have taught me a lot over the past few weeks and I value that knowledge. You are sharing years of experience with me so I can also try and help future new collectors. I have always said that when someone passes away its like burning down a library so I appreciate you letting me read your books! And yes I agree with the fishing

If you think there should be any difference having them level or turned 90 degrees. The eyes get used to seeing things a certain way. The brain has it already processed that way, because of the way we often view them. But look at the image below and see how turning the image changes what you are seeing: So when focusing to take an image, try to get the camera the right level direction before you even take the shot. It will have you havint to rotate the images later.

I did notice that John 101 and so you and coop know I understand . I agree totally with the pics in the correct rotation I even put them upright in the microscope so when I photograph them but something happened everytime between uploading and posting I was even previewing the post before I posted and the pics would be upright and when they loaded to the forum they were rotated but when I looked at the post after it was posted on my phone they were still upright but apparently everyone else was seeing them rotated . It wasn't that I didn't care it was actually a flaw somewhere no matter how I tried to upload they were rotated but now I save them as a draft and preview them on my computer for correct rotation . Hopefully john1 neck will stop hurting lol . Thanks guys !
