Sicily, Siculo-Punic. Tetradrachm; Sicily, Siculo-Punic; 320-315 BC, Tetradrachm, 16.82g. Jenkins-272 (O85/R226). Obv: Head of Dido r., wearing oriental tiara and loop earring. Rx: Lion walking r., head lowered and turned 3/4 facing, palm tree with date clusters behind, Punic legend SMMHNT (People of the Camp) in exergue. Ex Triton III, 30 November 1999, lot 350 (Marian A. Sinton Collection). This rare issue with a lion prowling below a palm tree was struck from three obverse dies. The other two obverses with a tiara are scarcer but this one is so unusual and beautiful that it is my favorite and unique as a design within the Greek series. Only fifteen coins of this issue were recorded by Jenkins. Some light hairlines in obverse right field from cleaning many years ago. Slight discolored line on cheek of Dido. Lion on reverse beautifully centered and very sharply struck for issue
