I found a pretty nice 1964 silver Washington quarter, but there are two pen marks which both say "S". It might have scratched the metal and that can not be fixed, but I am interested in just removing the ink. I rubbed it with acetone and nothing happened. Advice?

Might need to soak it longer in acetone and use a q-tip to gently remove the ink. If that don't work, not much else you can do.

Ok thanks, I'll try putting it in acetone for longer and using q-tips. I'll post what happens tomorrow.

I agree; it looks like someone scratched the coin, then put ink over and on the scratches to make the scratches stand out even more.

I have seen vandalized coins which have had this happen to them before. Specifically, coins from The Troubles in Ireland - both British and Irish coins, vandalized with propaganda for one side or the other.

It looks scratched to me but if you are wanting to get it out, try denatured alcohol... I know it will take off a sharpie mark so it should be able to take out pen ink...

- The value of this coin is never going to be more than melt value, or maybe a little less than mint value.

Any alterations at this point won't hurt the coin, but since those scratches can't be removed, it's not going to help it either.

Bryan has the best solution Denaturered, Isopropal or rubbing alcohol is very good at removing ink. Even so I believe you will find the coin is scratched so it is still just worth melt.

If none of these suggestions work, might as well try Jewlery cleaners.

Benja!
As others have already mentioned this coin is just worth melt value so nothing you do to it can destroy it's value any further.
I have never tried it on a coin but I use to use hair spray on hubbys work shirts for ink.
WD40 was my second go to. Or just leave it alone and start a junk silver collection.

Not worth the effort of conservation IMO. These are plentiful and cheap in MS grades.
