Also see a lot of halves with the PLURIBUS in the motto half or more missing. Anyone know why that happened? It doesn't look like wear.

The rub carries through to the A in states. Weak strike? Not sure. XF-40

AU-53 or 55. The scans really subdue the luster.

@MikeF Yes, that's a weak strike. My AU bust half displays the same characteristics.

My net grade would be EF-40. The piece might have some luster, but the surfaces in the picture look dull. It also does not have great eye appeal with spots of dark toning. There is also a rim issue at close to 12 o'clock on the obverse.

That is a strike issue and it's fairly common on these coins. That part of the motto is opposite Ms. Liberty's bust area. There was not enough metal to fill the dies, or perhaps the dies were not squeezed tight enough on the planchet to bring out all of the detail. Quite often Ms. Liberty's bust area is weakly struck too.

The detail was never struck up on the coin. It has nothing to do with wear.

Technical AU-50. But not struck up. Believe the black stuff will come off with acetone. Looks very original to me.

Yes, but what's under it after you have taken it off? Light spots and bright spots would not look much better.

I would pass on that coin. Here is two examples:
Bought this one because the price Paid was cheap and now I regret buying it. The black area around the cheek is all I see and now it in my junk box.
NGC problem free VF-35:

Don't buy this one! There is evidence of gunk on the obverse and looks like a cleaning on the reverse. There are nicer CBHD's on ebay and other sites for $200.
