1884 S/O? Morgan Dollar

Hi everyone,

I have do admit that I am not very familiar with US coins.
Nevertheless, I just won a lot at an online auction here in Germany that included two very nice Morgan dollars. They were just appealing to me.

Anyway, the photos that were provided by the auction house do not really have a high resolution. I was able to make out the mintmark O on one coin but the other coins mintmark looks clearly different to me. I just attached the images here and would like to get some opinions on what mintmark you guys can possibly see (or shall I say assume) there and how you'd grade the coin.

Of course, I'll also add some high-res images when the coins finally arrive but I guess that I'll have to wait for about 2 weeks or so until that happens.

We'll need closer pics on the mint mark to be able to tell.

As I said, I will provide larger images when I receive the coins.

However, I thought that based on comparison collectors of Morgan dollars might be able to at least have a guess.

Here is an image that shows the mint marks on both coins.

My guess is just based on the shape of the O on the right coin. To me it seems that the other mint mark just does not fit in terms of shape and it obviously is no CC so at least in my opinion that is some kind of an indicator that it could indeed be a S.

However, I'd be happy about opinions regarding the grade anyway.

Hello Potsdam,

As you already know we will need to see a high res image of the mint mark to identify it when you get this Morgan in hand. Until then I can tell you that it's an oval O mint mark. 1884 had 2 different mint mark shapes, oval O and round O. Another feature for 1884-O that is used to identify the die pairing is the date position. This is measured by the location of the 1 as compared to the denticles below with the bust point position as zero. The position of the date on yours is considered "very far" as it is beyond 3 full denticles. This narrows down the VAM (cataloged die pairings) possibilities considerably. I'm posting a link to the 1884-O VAM's that is sorted by the date position with very far date at the bottom of the page. I hope I'm wrong on this one but to me it looks like they are trying to hide something with the fuzzy pics. even cheap phones can take better pics than this. the thing thats bothering me is the dirt in some of the devices and denticles. an uncirculated piece should not have this. this one is a dilemma I guess until you actually get it to see whats up.

Both look like O mint coins to me.

Don't know about MM but they the coin in the first post looks MS64 to me.
