I really and seriously think that coin collecting could be facing a very big challenge in the next few years.
I'm thinking of New Collectors - whether they be young or old. We have series of coins that go on and on and on and on. For goodness sakes, that Lincoln series is absurd, ridiculous and NOT interesting except to the Lincolnphiles. Who in the HECK wants to look at 200 coins that look EXACTLY the same except they have a small D or S or NOT on the spot under the date.
YAWN. The Lincoln is the one that's really hit.
Of course, all the modern coins from the dime on have been hit by the silliness of having TWO proof coins each year. And those silver ones are expensive for no apparent reason. Another YAWN.
I will stop here. I have a new thread to create!!

I was really disappointed that the nickels reverse remained the same after the westward journey series. Stupid steps!

With the beard, and the extra weight. With a reverse of the planet, with an iceberg on top of it.

LOL now that's a coin everyone can enjoy! What if instead of people (Lady L included) we changed our designs to symbols of the nation? Like maybe using the Gadsden Flag on one coin, Statue of Liberty on another, the Liberty Bell, the Capitol Building, etc. You Know, symobols that mean freedom. For the penny, which this topic is about after all, why not go with a design featuring the head of a Bald Eagle on the obverse with the date wrapped around the bottom and "The United States of America" around the top. For the reverse, have the 13 stars form a circle with the words "Liberty or Death" printed in the middle. E Pluribus Unum would be on top of the ring of stars and one cent would be beneath it. What you guys think?

i like the idea of changing the coinage. why not find a theme for each denomination? I haven't thought this through enough to have the themes, but why not? they can change the coins out every 10, 15, 20 years or whatever. that's part of what I like about the older coins. the new ones(circulating) are sort of boring. I'm still new at this and dont have a lot older coins. working on that part of my collection

The Presidential dollars are going to have all the dead presidents on them. My personal choice would be a return to a symbolic representation of liberty, either using a female personification or "things" which symbolize liberty.

I agree that most of the great people of our past have been honored plenty enough! Also a few that didn't deserve the salary we paid the engraver!
If we just MUST have another dead pres, then Reagan is the only choice.
Personally I like the Lady Liberty theme. She changed with the times too... She took on an indian persona during the late 1800s. She symbolized war and peace during WWI and the short time before WWII.
What theme should she take on today?
Maybe glasses and a wrist brace for her hours in front of her PC and the resulting carple-tunnel? How about a bikini, due to global warming? Maybe she could impersonate Vincente Fox... Now that the indians are gone/subdued.
Just kidding... Hope you guys/gals have a sense of humor!

A little O/T here, but I can't help it... quote: rohumpy: The Presidential dollars are going to have all the dead presidents on them.
They darn sure didn't get any Laura Frasers, Victor Brenners, or John Flanagans designing any of those did they?!? Those dollars are almost as artistically handicapped as the SBA and Saka... dollars. Totally uninspired IMO. Sorry if I offend anyone that collects any of these. Just an honest opinion.

I like the FIRST Roosevelt........Theodore !!......The Buck stops here !....And the Rough Riders storming Cuba.....And Bully ! His Cousin the War President F.D.R was incredible too........but I like that big ole western mustache and all of the western people he was associated with. Charismatic and a unique personality for sure !...Took office upon an assassination......but I believe pretty popular !...I've been to a few National Forests named after him. Certainly a facinating fellow. But, yeah.....for me Ronald Wilson Reagan would have to be at or near the top !

Ronald Reagan would be nice, but I do not think he would approve. His lifetime is recent enough to get input from people that personally knew him. Many have said he would not want to be on circulating money. He probably felt as uncomfortable with the idea as others are said to have been. I think they best way to honour Reagan, and everyone else, is to return Liberty to our regular issue coins.
