Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the first picture gives it away as MD because the mintmark is effected.

If it were a true doubled die, the mintmark should look normal since it was hand-punched later.

The mint mark on doubled dies can also be affected by Mechanical Doubling.
There are known examples of the 1969-S DDO-001 that also have the MD on the mint mark and the date.

This photo from Heritage Auctions is one such example:

Thanks cwb.

I should clarify that it's hand punched on the die, not the coin and this practice stopped in 1989/1990, I believe, when the mintmark became part of the hub that creates the dies.

Also, MD makes the letters/numbers thinner. a doubled die doesn't make the letters thinner, thickness stays the same and it is doubled.

Keep in mind that in order to the real deal, the coin has to match 100% (every letter and numbers) as seen on the picture below of the real one since the doubling is caused by the actual die being doubled.

On my signature I have links to websites that will contains pictures and information of known doubled dies.

Sprue, on the pre-1989's it is a good indication that it is probably not a Doubled Die. (We read the same book.) I think that was in Cherry Pickers.
