I bought a 1834 large cent. It has the word "yAo" written on the cardboard. Any idea what that means?

That's probably code for how much was paid for it.

Dealers devise a code to "encrypt" the price they paid, or maybe the least they will take. Then when offered a price, they can check the code to see if they want to take the offer, counter offer or not.

I've not heard of that but it makes sense and is really interesting. Can anyone determine what it means?

Unless you know the 10 letter word then it is hard to figure out what was paid.
It works like this. Come up with a ten letter word the does not have repeat letters.
For example
EARTHLINGS
With this example E = 0, A = 1, R = 2 .. etc.
When you are adding a code to the 2x2, most add letters that are not in the code word.
So if you paid $50 for a coin, L = 5 and E= 0
But you might write on the 2x2 XLME

My friend has a code where he puts the asking price say $200, then in roman numerals a number, then you subtract the asking price and the roman numerals to find out what he paid. Example: Ask $200 Numeral: LV (55) ::::He paid $145 for the coin. I may implement a system similar one day if I ever deal coins at shows.

Interesting - didn't know stores did this - I'll have to keep an eye out for this.

My local coin dealer does that too. The letters are the initials of the dealer that he bought it from.

I do it! It really helps in remembering what you paid for things!

I have a 10 letter word as a code for my costs. I also throw in some letters that are not part of the word just to obfuscate it more. If someone can figure out my cost codes, they should be working for the NSA.
