This came across the counter to me today at my bank. Pretty unusual to see one this slick.... The date is about half obliterated already. It wouldn't take too much more wear to render it unreadable and thus the coin uncertifiable. Colligo ergo sum

Nice find! Looks like a nice lowball to me. Perhaps a former pocket piece or a casino escapee.

Quote: Perhaps a former pocket piece or a casino escapee. Casinos were about the only venues in which Ikes "circulated", but I think if it had seen such use, it wouldn't display such smooth surfaces and a ding-free rim. I'd also remark that since these are so much more resistant to wear than silver coinage (observe how decent the typical 1971 quarter looks when you find one in your change), to induce this much wear in a pocket piece would seem a pretty tough task. I was wondering if it could've been a metal detector find on a beach where wave/sand dynamics abraded it, but in that scenario I'd sort of expect the center to be taken down as much as the peripheral areas, and that's clearly not the case. I confess to not having a good explnation for this coin being in this condition. Quote: You did buy it, right? In the sense that I handed over a dollar bill for it, absolutely.

I've been looking for a nice lowball to send in. The closest I got was a 1971 D Half Dollar in F 12.

Even that's somewhat hard to account for, as little as Kennedy halves have generally circulated over the years. Since nobody's yet ventured an opinion on the grade of my Ike, I'll say I'm inclined to place it at AG03 on the basis that the pertrait isn't too far gone.

Very nice low ball, just enough to barely read the date and no damage nor corrosion!

I looked up the NGC population report this evening, and there've been three 1971-D's that graded in the Poor to About Good range, although they don't break that down further.

It is a pocket piece. I have a 1972 that it a little more worn than that.
