Question: "OK, I'm a newbie - where's the term "rattler" come from?"
Answer: The coin usually moved around in the holder. If you were to shake the holder, the coin would rattle.

Yep, the old slabs didn't hold the coin tightly in place. Like banddean said, shake the holder and the coin will rattle. I don't have any PCGS rattlers, but I have an ANACS rattler.

Here are mine -- I have only 3 of these old PCGS slabs: All of these were purchased long ago.

Quote: Coin all those coins look like they'd upgrade by 1 or 2 points by today's standards. The one that wouldn't upgrade would be the 1901 O. I've resubmitted 2 of them at no charge to ANACS. Most of them actually don't upgrade. Quote: OK, I'm a newbie - where's the term "rattler" come from? The coin rattles in the slab when it is moved because they aren't held tightly.
