What is a fair price for circulated Barber half dollars? I purchased 5 low-grade circulated examples for $7 a piece at the local coin show. Is this the rate to be expected from a high-volume coin/jewelry store?

Mike , I don't see what your rant is , $7 apiece is a fair
price for a Jewelry store .

Melt value is $6.64 each. You paid $2.70 over melt for 5 coins. The seller most likely picked them up for $6 each and made a profit of $5.

You should have tried to get it down to $6.75 or $6.50, but about fair.
Rest in Peace

Watch out, Mike. T-Bob is about to T-Bop you..

Junk silver at my store was something around 15x face, so it would have been $7.50 there, and he only had a few walkers and a 1963 Franklin in there. I would have bought those Barbers at your price.

AG/G common date Barber halves without major defects will sell for $7 to $9 all day long; coins with full rims on both sides, a bit more. You paid a fair price.
