Hello. I just purchased this from an ebay auction. The seller called it Uncirculated. These are seller pictures. There is a return policy if I am not happy with it in hand. What would you grade it? I plan on submitting. Thank you.

Looks like wear on the thigh AU 53

Dipped with light wear on the high points. This is not an Uncirculated piece. It is not even a nice AU piece because the streaks that were left on the reverse after the coin was dipped. It also should have more luster. Here is a piece that NGC graded MS-64, which has also been dipped. Note the difference in the luster.

Hello Bill, thank you for the input. I do see what you are saying. I will submit it instead of returning it because at the price I bought it at, an AU 53 would still be very profitable. Thanks again.

Sorry. I missed the fact that it's a Half Dime. My Half Dime is an 1854, which similar to the 1853 dime.

It looks like a cleaned AU piece. It's hard to see the luster and if it's still good you should be okay. The dark streak across the reverse might be from improper rinsing after dipping.

Bill, on that dime you posted. I would not have put that in the dipped category. can you explain what are the tell tale signs on this coin to look for?
the original coin listed I have at XF45 details. if it was mine, I would not slab it but if it came back AU it would be good deal.

I bought that dime over 10 years ago, and it has gotten a little toning since then. It was white and lustrous when I bought it, and there no way that coin coin of that age could not have picked up some tarnish.
I knew it had been dipped when I bought, but the "With Arrows" coins are not among my favorites. Add to that the fact that the mints pushed the devil out of the dies because of the high mintages in 1853-5 (especially in 1853) and you get a lot of dull, unattractive coins. When you see an 1853 With Arrows coin with a decent look in the MS grade it's worth considering unless you are ready pay of fortune for something that is really superior. I'm not. I'd rather put the big bucks in to a really nice early U.S. coin dated before 1807.
