I bought a baggie of coins from a Goodwill store for $9.99 around 8 years ago as some caught my eye. I did a bit of searching for info and the closest I could find out is a type of groat. The coin wieghs 6.5 grams. Any ideas? Thank-You.

Hello brannid and ! This appears to be a modern reproduction of a medieval groat. The obverse looks like a medieval groat, but the reverse states "Struck at Canterbury Tales Visitor Attraction". The Canterbury Tales is about 15 miles from where I live, and is an attraction inside a former church. You walk through the church and re-trace the journey of Chaucer's pilgrims, hearing recordings of some of their tales. I've never seen these coin replicas being struck there, but the similar Jorvik attraction in York sometimes has a 'coiner' striking replica Viking coins, so I imagine the Canterbury Tales must have had a similar set-up at some time. You can read about the Canterbury Tales here: https://www.canterburytales.org.uk/...-attraction/

Thank-You NumisRob. Great info. I had a feeling repro as it has a reeded edge. Your info makes it more clear as to why I could'nt find another one like it on the web. Being new to the site is their a way to give a tip to you? Thanks again. brannid

It's a pleasure, brannid! I was quite interested to see your replica groat, as I've been to the Canterbury Tales numerous times ever since it opened - usually as a tour guide, escorting groups - and I've never seen anything like it there, although they do have a squashed penny machine. They do have special events from time to time in the school holidays, so maybe one year they had a 'strike your own coin' event. Perhaps if you contacted them via the link on their website, someone could tell you exactly when it was made!

Hello NumisRob, I just heard back from Canterbury Tales and this is what Vicki had to say. ((Thanks for getting in touch! What I have discovered since you emailed is that we do, in fact, have a coin press on site. Unfortunately, it has been a long time since anyone was trained to use it, but I can confirm hat your coin probably did come from here. No-one currently here can recall us using the press, and the attraction is 30 years old, so I would guess that this is anything from 4-30 years old.))
Sorry to not be more precise.
All the very best,
Vicki Lyden

Thanks for posting this, brannid!
Perhaps I should go over there and offer my services as a moneyer?
