Hi have a 1987 D mint cent that is not plated and has no copper plating. It is not bumpy and has not been stripped. It is in near mint condition. Have any one found anything like this? I also have a 1981 D mint cent that is zinc and not plated with copper. It is in near uncirculated condition. I know that the first minting of zinc/copper pennies was in 1982 and have no mint mark. I think that this may be a trial cent. Do any of you know anything about this?

to the forum!

What you may have are genuine mint errors. If they truely are unplated cents, they are collectable.
Many cents get the plating removed, which is considered damage.
For us to help you, we will need to see some pictures of your coins.

Images would tell us more. But the 1981 cent would not be zinc. The weight would tell us more on that one.

I completely missed the date on the 1981-D!

I guess my brain wasn't turned completely on yet.
That would indeed be a rare find. I have often wondered if any were out there that may have been minted on 1982 Zinc planchets.

Rest in Peace

to the family!
Coinops, what it sounds like is 1981 is a plated novelty coin, see if slightly magnetic, that would indicate a nickel plating, stronger mag attraction is steel. Could be the same for other, outfits picked random dates to coat electroplate.

I have a 1987 D without copper. Here are a couple pics of it. Is it stripped? I found it in change 25 years ago or so. Sorry for the trash pics...it was the best I could do with a phone

jjttdw, No, it is not possible to help you as your camera is totally focused on the background making it impossible yo see your coin as we would need to. Please try again, but in a thread of your own, NOT one that is nearly four years old! Create a thread of your own and try posting another photo of your coin, (both sides), again, please.

to the CCF! We hope to see you with your own thread very soon!
