I just cherrypicked this variety off ebay. I was surprised, because I just started looking for this DDR, and found it on the top of the new listings. The whole coin. Despite a couple marks, I think it grades AU50+ and is a good strike without too much die wear. The doubling around E.P.U is pretty distinct. I shot this pic with a low lighting angle and brought down the brightness a lot to better resolve details: In later die states, a lot of the doubling is obscured. I think my coin falls between these two examples. As doubled dies go, this variety might be the biggest one I own, in terms of area affected on the coin. I found it's easier to see all the doubling with direct comparisons to a normal reverse:

Thanks for the new photos. Definitely a DDR. There is something up with the surfaces of the coin--your increased detail comparison photos show it. Surface looks almost rough or pitted. Not sure if corroded? Maybe someone else has thoughts.

Quote: Surface looks almost rough or pitted. Not sure if corroded? Sorta off-topic, but most definitely not porous, corroded, or pitted due to environment. Those detail pictures were shot using rather extreme techniques to resolve details--I wouldn't interpret surfaces from it. Under more normal light--there's some toning spots sure, but not corrosion or pitting. It's also not a late-state die, which I'm pretty happy about.

OK Thulium, You inspired me. So I went onto ebay last night and could not believe it. I saw what I thought was another one with a bid of only 9.50. I won it for 13.50! The pics are not good, but zooming the notches on E.PLUR... are there as is doubling in the other devices where it should be. The pics also make it look like it may have been cleaned. But I don't mind so much with the amount of detail still showing. Not as nice as yours, but I am hoping it surprises me when it gets here. Here is the REV pic from the auction:

Hi Earle, I do see what looks like doubling on E.P.U, but I don't usually look there for the DDR on ebay pictures. Comparing the eagle feathers, I don't think I see the markers for the DDR on yours. . But, that's just my (inexpert) take. Either way, $13.50 is a good price for that coin. .

Thanks for this assessment, and you could be right. I am hoping its just the angle not showing it so well. I actually used you pics to compare the bad pic in the auction. I see it on DOLLAR like it should be also. Originally I thought maybe it was a bad pic of MD, but what looks like notching in the motto is what made me think it could be a good one. I can only hope! Even if not - it was a fun ride Will post results.

Nice pick up Thulium! I see I have some competition...lol My avvy is my MS-64 DDR I cherry picked off ebay, one of 2 in the last few years that were Certified as 64's. Got a few AU-58's 55 ec.t and a bunch of circulated vg-xf. I think they can be found in the forum as I posted them raw before sending them out. Earle, good luck on the pick-up but unfortunately it is not a DDR. it is fun searching so don't give up!

I'm surprised so many unattributed are on ebay. According to PCGS, about 3000 survive in all grades.

Keep looking Thulium. Sometimes the well goes dry and then 3 or 4 will pop up. It is my favorite coin and I can't seem to stop buying them!
I think there is a lot more than 3000 survivors, but just my opinion based on what I have and what I see still out there.

Well - there are two strikes against mine being a DDR by people who are more educated about the subject. I know I will enjoy the coin, but not be so excited now - so won't be as disappointed. I certainly will learn from this and still have a nice Walker! I am looking forward to close inspection of this one to see how the pic fooled me. RK55 - can you help me along by educating me as to what you see please? Granted - I know its just a photo. Thanks guys.
