Im hoping someone can help me with 1968 mint set I have, one from Denver and one from Philadelphia mint. The package from the Philadelphia mint is missing the Kennedy half dollar and in its place is another penny without the S. I also can't find the S on the dime or quarter, I inherited a coin collection from my grandfather 10 years ago so they are not tampered with. I also have a 1964 proof set with I believe the Kennedy extra hair error, Plus others but I just realized these couns might be top collectors. I'm excited to hear from you all. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Hello, Jheitzig. What you have are the 1968 uncirculated mint sets. You have coins from the Denver and Philadelphia mints. The Philadelphia mint did not make a half dollar that year, which is why the plastic token is in its place. The San Francisco mint did mint cents for circulation until 1974, so the S cent is included in the Philadelphia mint set packaging. There is no S on the dime or quarter because they were minted in Philadelphia and Philly coins did not carry a mint mark until 1980 (the exception being the 1979 Susan B Anthony dollar.) Feel free to attach a picture of the 1964 proof set. We will be able to tell you if it's an example of the accented hair variety (not error since it was a design that was intentionally made, but then switched at the request of Jackie Kennedy). I believe your 1968 mint set question is resolved, so we do not need any pictures to provide you with more information, but feel free to post them if you'd like.

Quote:One major variety of the 1964 Kennedy half dollar featured accented hair on the portrait of John F. Kennedy on the obverse of the coin. This is believed to be the first design used on Kennedy half dollars and only 1%-3% of 1964 proof coins are of this variety (between 40000 and 120000 coins minted). Google Kennedy accented hair and you'll find sites that have photos about how to tell if you have that variety.

I hope your proof half dollar turns out to be accented hair!

Thank you all for the feedback.
For my 1964 proof set, I'm feeling optimistic because I see a matching G on the back of the quarter and the nickel has a a kind of goldish patina to it along with the other coins. You can probably assume it's from handling the coins as the made the set. The penny has a very clean but dark copper color, to bad I can't get my photos uploaded for you guys, too big is says.
I'll have to get them professionally checked out maybe?
The I looks right on the front, the hair is heavier and the G on the back looks like this one, plus the nickel looks really cool.

The "tint" or coloring is called "toning" in the coin collecting world. Many folks like toned coins, but some don't care for them. I have accented hair Kennedy and the easiest way I can tell is looking at the reverse at the rays where the 4 stars are between the eagle's head and right wing (as you look at it). I know my photos are crappy, but hopefully you can see what I mean (I circled the incomplete or broken parts of the rays). I put a normal Kennedy below it for comparison. Accented hair Kennedy: Normal Kennedy for comparison:

Thanks batboy, I decided to get out my sons microscope and get a close up look and unfortunately it's a normal 1964 quarter.

Bummer. But, you said quarter, you meant Kennedy half, right?
