The Mercury dime ... Old grading standards, Fine. New grading standards, VF-25
The Buffalo nickel has Fine sharpness, but its net grade is G-VG because of corrosion and porous surfaces. Most people think of corrosion as the green stuff that forms on copper. On copper-nickel coins, like the nickel, it is usually black. When a copper-nickel coin, which includes the Flying Eagle cents; the thick, white Civil War era Indian cents; the Nickel Three Cent Piece; all of the nickels; and the modern clad coinage are black, it is almost never a good thing.
