well, I nic-ed some dates off of some Buffalo nickels that my dad had, and I must say I had some pretty good results and some pretty good finds. Is the first one a 13? should I try one more application of nic-a-date? If it is, how do I tell the differant types?

Nic-A-Date

My personal favorite, a pretty key date and mint '21-S

Here is what is left of the S.

If I wanted to get either of these graded will ANACS or NGC do it? Should I just save my money?

on a type 1 it looks like the buffalo is standing on a hill with "Five Cents" in the hill, on a type 2 reverse it is just a thin line of the hill he is standing on with "Five Cents" under the bottom line

ANACS will slab it as a chemically treated problem coin, and PCGS/NGC would bodybag it for that reason. I think it's a 1913 coin.

I see 1913 as well. Like Bryan said, what does the back look like?

I will get a pic of the back tonight, but I got prematurely excited as there is no mint mark. I believe that it is a type-2. Would be sweet if I could move that S over from that '21.

Are there many G-4 Buffalos out there that still have dates on them? The date surely disappears by the time it gets to G-4 doesn't it?

One of the attributes of a G-4 Buffalo is that the date is still readable. Once the date is missing, it goes to AG-3 or lower.

From the Coin Facts page on Buffalo Nickels:

G4 Good - Legends and date readable. Horn worn off.

Here is the reverse, type-2 right? So if a G4 '21-S is worth $65, what is mine worth?

On ebay, a 1921-S that has been acid dated will go from anywhere between $4 to $9. Generally I've found that the nic-a-dates go for about 1/10th of the G4 prices and none over $20, except for any 1918/7 which will still go for $100 or more. (I've never seen a 1937-D 3-Legged that was nic-a-dated, but if there were I would guess that one would go for $100-$150.

On that 1913 Type 2, you will be lucky to get $1 for it. 1913 nic-a-dates are pretty common on ebay. Only the 1913-S type 2 will go for anything more than $5, Even the 1913-D T2 can be had for $3-$4.

Nice finds. First one is definitely 1913. Value, though is low. Maybe 25-50 cents.

I've seen debate on whether a G4 is two date or full 4 digit date. For example, even if you see only the 2 and 0, you know it must be 1920, but can't see the 1 and 9. Partial date bulk lots can be bought for only 35 cents apiece (which amazes me, only 7x above face value). No dates are running 3-5x (usually 4x) face value on ebay. I agree with what was said above that acid restored dates are typically selling for about 1/10th the G4 value. A 13S T2 restored key generally sells for around $30-50.

I do think at some point that restored dates will gain some momentum, because the Buffalo nickel series is very popular yet most people can't drop 50, 100, or more for the many semi-keys and keys. So the natural tendency is for collectors to fill their collection with lower grade pieces.

In just about every dateless Buffalo nickel lot I buy that contains mint marked coins, I find a 13S T2, so maybe the way to go is to buy lots of dateless coins, restore the mint marked ones, keep some as fillers and sell the rest, especially the 13S T2 Key. Then use the proceeds to upgrade your collection to better grades.

Mycrob,

I agree with you. I think these coins will gain some momentum once prices of todays buffalos go much higher. You can complete an entire buff set (sans overdates) for ~$75. You cannot beat that.
