Hi all ok only one coin per post. I keep finding this error as I search the 1969 s penny rolls. in this photo the 9 is not fully round other coins I have looked at the 6 and 9 are not round. Is this a common error. Is this also Machine Doubling? Doing my best with contrast and lighting.

I'd say that's Machine Doubling due to a worn die.

Hi William, it looks like the coin was just damaged? A scrape or hit could flatten the last nine.

CoinMasters, I was under the impression that Machine Doubling differs from Die Deterioration Doubling? Isn't the first equivalent to Strike Doubling, which you quoted Wexler (or some other error guru) on?

I see Die Deterioration Doubling here, but no Machine Doubling. Evident in the first close up around the 696 of the date, and below Lincoln's chin in the subsequent pictures.

Either MD or worn die - Die Deterioration Doubling - ( DDD)

Machine Doubling comes in two major forms. Wear on the die that alters devices on coins it strikes, and inadvertent movement of the die that alters devices on coins. They are both forms of MD and both considered Strike Doubling because they occur at the time of the strike.
Rest in Peace

Coin masters you nailed it. This is classic MD due to REDUCTION of size with shelving effect. Happens at strike!

Actually the shelving effect happens with the inadvertent movement. The worn die usually leaves the "doubling" sloppier. With the inadvertent movement (usually referred to as Strike Doubling) the die actually jumps a little, smashing some of the devices it just made. It flattens part of them leaving a shelf-like doubling. Thereby, the unaffected portion of the devices is reduced in size.

If you take a real close up of that it will show die flow from die wear such as this

Nice pic Mike. You remind me of myself. lol When you have something you like, you like to show it. We have that in common. I think it's more of a blessing than a curse.

The weakness on the outside of the deices might be from a slight amount of grease on the devices of that side ('9') The MD can be seen strongest on the upper loop of the 9 near the 6. Wiping of the dies with a cloth with leave more grease on one side of the devices than on others:

Thus affecting the strike of that device.

No one can email you until you have enough posts. It would be best to ask your question on a new thread and ask the question there.

You'll be amazed how simple it is when you master it. You can't upload from the "quick reply" box at the bottom of the page. It must be done from the "reply to topic" box at the top of the page. You might also want to check out the "tutorials" box up top.
