Since "Yesterday" has been posting some nice Shield nickels, let's see what you think of this one. I bought it raw and had it graded.

I'll start it off. Love it by the way. I would say MS65 maybe 66. Looks to have some amazing luster.

Yes. Great luster. Reverse Cuds look interesting too. I like this coin at MS-64. Reverse strike, while typical, is rather weak. Very nice coin!

I have it at somewhere between 63 and 64.

Small reverse scratch to left of 5 between the rays. Discoloration at 7 o'clock in reverse near rim. Reverse rim Cuds due to failing dies at the edges.

Few hits to the horizontal and vertical lines in the shield in obverse. Some raised metal from die rust at the base of leftmost vertical line of shield. Die cracks. Hit to the 1 in the date. Interesting that the sixes in the date have different fonts.

Nice obverse fields and overall luster. Beautiful coin.

I'm thinking MS65. I can't really pick up the color/luster so it's tough to go higher (or lower).

For those of you who guessed MS-64, congratulations! That's what NGC graded it.

BTW the "brown spots" are not really defects. They are areas where the copper is showing in the alloy. Remember that these coins are made of 75% copper and 25% nickel. In the 19th century the mint did not always get the metals mixed properly. In fact the mint had a lot of problems in the production of these coins. Mint employees called copper-nickel "the devil's copper" for that reason.
