Here's a 1872 IHC that I'm looking at, but I need help. This one has me a bit puzzled as to what grade to call it. It has a few detracting dings in the obverse and a nick in the rim at 3 o'clock on the reverse. I keep going back and forth from XF-40 to XF-45. Then sometimes I think maybe AU, but then I look at the diamond pattern in the ribbon and go back down to XF-40.

EF45 details - ribbon has separation and three diamonds are visible - but with a definite unfriendly cleaning, and light porosity, especially notable around the legends, date, and behind the ribbon; on the reverse there is a nice little Cud and chip at K10. It was probably prettier before it got cleaned; it was likely a nice dark brown with lighter brown planchet streaks.

xf-40 I agree with the cleaning, too bad it was not left alone.

Yeah I guess I have to agree with the light cleaning . But all in all not too shabby of a coin . 40 would be a safe call ,45 would be stretching the daylights out of it .

I thought maybe light cleaning too, but wasn't completely sure.
How do you price a "details" coin?
If I could get it for about the value of a VF-20, would that be about right or still too much?

Cleaned yes. I think it's an AU-50 details coin. I wouldn't pay more than 350.00 for it. It may re-tone with some Deller's Darkener and a long sit on a window sill.

Is it possible that the pictures were enhanced?

The photos are the seller's. 1972 bold N variety? Of course I've never heard of that, so I had to look it up. It does look like a "bold N" variety. But apparently, the "shallow N" variety is worth a little more.

You guys are impressive and most were right on the money. Just for confirmation purposes, here is what the seller says about this coin: 1872 Indian cent choice XF-45. Coin has been lightly cleaned and has a few dings on the obverse. To the untrained eye it looks like an AU.
