I was hunting this for quite a while. This particular coin only affects Denmark 1812 12 skilling which is overstruck over 1771 1 skilling.

You can see the number "1771" right above the King's head. I unfortunately do not have a 1771 1 skilling photo to compare with - google images do have some examples.

As of why 1771 1 skilling was chosen, I have no idea. Perhaps this was the only copper coin available? Many coins prior to this were struck in cheap silver billion. Also do note - this coin seems to be cut down / shaved from the original coin! Perhaps when it was overstruck, it became enlarged and had to cut down to shape. This does have an interesting edge as well.

Would be interested to know more about this history!

Whenever I hear of a Skilling error or overstrike I think of the most famous of them all but it being actually a MULE - The Syd Martin/Late Mike Ringo George Triumpho/Skilling Mule. See Colonial Newsletter (CNL-120) August 2002 - p.2361. Here is the link in the Eric P. Newman Portal under Periodicals - Colonial Newsletter - 2002.

Perhaps in this article there is some relevance to your piece?
BTW - since 2002 a third specimen has NEVER surfaced of this MULE. Still two known - Rarity 8.
Nice piece!

John - interesting link. Not related to this coin but I really enjoy reading overstruck coins around the world. The US coin in particular is interesting - never seen anything like that before. Thanks for the link!

Nice coin! I have a soft spot for these types as well.

If you have time to kill you might want to check out Sweden 1 ore struck over 1 dalers (1700s) and 1 skilling struck over 2 ore (1800s)

Some really amazing examples that are fairly common & very affordable, here's mine sole example:

I do have a Swedish overstruck coin listed in my world overstruck coin collection.

There's more varieties for Swedish coins but I'll leave it to just one example.
