Paper notes used to have a fine metal thread down the centre, but in the 70's it was moved to the side of the note as they were found to tear along the metal thread, which was also where the note would be folded in half. Having the thread on the side made it less susceptible to tearing. I'm not sure when the thread was discontinued, probably with the intrduction of polymers. I don't really collect notes, so my info may be less than 100% accurate. Sorry I can't help you out with grades for notes, not my field of experience.

Put the note up near a light, you should see the thread either down the center or to the left.
Hard to tell grade due to the quality of the pictures.
The values....retail values as per McDonalds book in AUD are:
$5 Fine $8 VF $15 EF $22 Yours looks like a low grade.
$20 Centre Fine $40 VF $80 EF $170 Side Fine $55 VF $115 EF $235 again looks like a low grade but would beed to see better pictures

That would be a side thread. A centre thread is literally smack bang down the middle of the note. Although I don't collect notes, I think you'll find this applies to all Aussie Paper Decimal notes. (Don't quote me on this! ) I can remember that the Gov't decided to move the thread to the side for the reason given above but can't remember exactly when it was.

The rarest of the aussie $20 notes is the Coombs Randell issue
Prefix XBQ to XBS XBQ 000001 to XBS 200000
Theis note had an extremely short print run of only one month as a result of the retirement of the then Governor of the Reserve Bank, H. C. Coombes. A total of just 2.2 million $20 notes with the Coombs/Randall signature combination were printed.

Unfortunately justa hasn't been back to the forum for a looooong time. He was a Uni student from Japan, over here for a couple years and took quite a fancy to our money. Maybe he had to return to Japan and for whatever reason, can't get access to the forum.
